Frequently asked questions
What is the VAT rate in Kenya?
The standard VAT rate is 16%. Some goods and services are zero-rated (0%) or exempt โ check the VAT Act schedules for your product.
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the price by 1.16. For example, KSh 10,000 + 16% VAT = KSh 11,600.
How do I remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price?
Divide by 1.16. A price of KSh 11,600 including VAT is KSh 10,000 before VAT, so the VAT is KSh 1,600. Don't just take 16% off the total โ that gives the wrong answer.
Who must register for VAT in Kenya?
Businesses with taxable sales of KSh 5 million or more in any 12-month period must register for VAT with KRA. Smaller businesses can register voluntarily.
When are VAT returns due?
By the 20th of the following month. Filing late costs 5% of the VAT due or KSh 10,000, whichever is higher.
