Your PayPal Money Is Stuck. Here Is the Cheapest Way Out.

PayPal money trapped in your account? M-PESA to your phone is fastest at 3% flat. For larger amounts or when you can wait, a bank transfer sometimes saves a few hundred shillings—so pick your move before hitting withdraw.

Your PayPal Money Is Stuck. Here Is the Cheapest Way Out.

You earned the money. Now PayPal won't let it move. The platform works fine for Kenyans receiving USD—but getting that money into your pocket costs money, and the route you choose matters more than you think.

The short answer: use PayPal's PayPal to M-PESA service for instant cash, or link to Equity Bank if your amount is large enough. Each path has its own fee structure and speed. There is no free option.

The M-PESA route: fast, but with a price

To withdraw PayPal to M-PESA, open the M-PESA app, go to Services then Global, tap PayPal, choose Withdraw, enter the USD amount and confirm with your PIN. PayPal takes a 3% conversion fee and the cash usually lands in minutes, up to 3 days for large amounts.

This is the path most Kenyans use because it's straightforward. The PayPal and M-PESA service sends money straight to your phone, so you do not need a bank account or card to cash out. You only need your PayPal and M-PESA in the same name.

You can move up to KES 250,000 per transaction and KES 500,000 a day (standard M-PESA limits). Below that, the 3% fee applies cleanly. If you are moving $100, that costs about 3% of the converted shilling value—roughly KES 400 depending on the day's exchange rate.

What catches people: PayPal charges a flat 3% currency-conversion fee, applied on its own daily USD-to-KES rate (which carries a small margin). That margin means PayPal's rate is not the mid-market rate—it sits slightly lower. So the real cost is slightly above 3% when you compare it to what banks get.

Equity Bank: slower, sometimes cheaper for big amounts

Equity Bank is the Kenyan bank best known for PayPal withdrawals. You link your Equity account to PayPal through Equity's PayPal withdrawal service, request a withdrawal, and the money is converted to shillings and credited to your account, usually within a day or two.

This route works if your earning was larger—say $500 or more. It usually arrives within a day or two. The conversion margin is similar to M-PESA, but when you move bigger chunks, the fixed component of any fee matters less, so the bank path can edge ahead.

The catch: you must have an Equity account first. And you are waiting. If you need cash today, skip this.

Why PayPal to M-PESA is not the whole story

The 3% fee only tells half the cost story. On goods or commercial receipts, PayPal also deducts about 4.4% plus USD 0.30 per payment, plus PayPal's own FX margin. That happens before you even see the money in your PayPal balance.

If you received money for freelance work or online sales, not a friend sending you cash, PayPal cut into it already. When you then withdraw to M-PESA, that 3% applies to what is left. The total loss is real and worth calculating before you accept a job.

For friends and family transfers, you avoid PayPal's incoming 4.4% fee, so the withdrawal path costs less.

Getting the cheapest move

Bundle your withdrawals. Service fees are largely fixed per transaction, so withdrawing USD 1,000 once costs less in fee terms than USD 100 ten times. If you are paid regularly, collect a few weeks and withdraw once instead of every Friday.

Hold your balance in USD. PayPal lets you keep money in dollars with no charge. If the Kenyan shilling is wobbling, wait for a steadier rate to convert.

If you are stuck choosing between M-PESA and Equity Bank: use M-PESA for anything under KES 250,000 or when you need the money today. Use the Equity route for bigger sums where you can wait one or two days.
