How to Set Up an M-Pesa Till Number for Your Business

Setting up an M-Pesa till number is one of the fastest ways to accept customer payments in Kenya. Unlike a full bank account, the process is straightforward and free. You'll need a till number if you run a shop, salon, restaurant, or any business where customers hand over cash or want to pay by phone.

The till number—also called a Business Till Number or Paybill Number—lets customers send you money directly through their M-Pesa menu. Money lands in your M-Pesa wallet or business account within seconds.

Who Can Apply for an M-Pesa Till

Safaricom allows sole proprietors, partnerships, and registered limited companies to apply. You don't need to be a massive enterprise. A hawker with a mobile phone qualifies. You do need a valid Kenyan ID, a phone number registered with Safaricom, and ideally some form of business identification—though Safaricom's requirements have relaxed significantly since 2024.

If you're a sole trader without formal registration, you can still apply using just your ID and personal details. Many small vendors operate this way legally.

The Application Process

Visit your nearest Safaricom shop or customer service center with your ID and a completed M-Pesa Business Registration Form. You can also start the application online at safaricom.co.ke, but you'll need to complete verification in person eventually.

At the Safaricom center, staff will take your details, verify your identity against the national database, and submit your application. The waiting period is typically 7 to 14 days. Safaricom reviews your details to confirm you're not flagged by any regulatory agency.

Once approved, you'll receive an SMS with your till number and activation instructions. Your account will have a daily transaction limit (usually KSh 300,000 for new tills), which increases after consistent use. Business setup experts on Kaziiko can advise on structuring your business formally if you want higher limits or planning to scale.

What Happens After Activation

Your till number is ready to share immediately. Display it on your storefront, receipt books, or invoice. Customers enter your till number into their M-Pesa menu under "Lipa na M-Pesa Online" and complete the payment. You see the money in real-time.

Transaction charges run 2% to 2.5% depending on the amount. A KSh 1,000 sale costs you about KSh 20-25 in fees. There's no monthly subscription or rental for basic till operation.

You can withdraw cash from any M-Pesa agent at standard withdrawal rates. You can also link your till to a business bank account for automatic daily settlements if your bank supports M-Pesa integration—most Kenyan banks do.

Reconciliation is simple because M-Pesa sends itemized statements via SMS and your till displays daily totals. Many businesses print daily summaries for their records.

If you run a formal business and need invoicing, compliance tracking, or tax integration, find a verified Kenyan expert on Kaziiko who specializes in retail business setup. They can help structure your till reporting for KRA compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get approved for an M-Pesa till?

Typically 7 to 14 days from submission. Safaricom processes applications in batches. If there are issues with your details or identity verification, it may take longer.

What's the difference between a till number and a Paybill number?

A till number (Business Till Number) is for retail shops and small businesses. A Paybill number is for utility companies, insurance firms, and organizations collecting bulk payments. Most small businesses need a till.

Can I use my personal M-Pesa account instead of a till?

No. Personal accounts have strict receiving limits and Safaricom will suspend them if you use them for commercial purposes. A business till is designed for this and has higher limits and better reporting.

What happens if my till reaches its daily limit?

Customers' payments will fail after you hit the limit. You can't accept more money that day. The limit resets at midnight. Higher limits unlock after consistent monthly transaction history.
