How to Apply for a Driving Licence on NTSA TIMS in Kenya (2026)
Getting your Kenyan driving licence through NTSA TIMS is now fully online — but the portal is frustrating. This guide shows you how to book a test slot, what documents to carry, and how to avoid common mistakes.
Understanding the NTSA TIMS Portal
The National Transport and Safety Authority moved all driving licence applications to its Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS) at tims.ntsa.go.ke. Everything — new applications, renewals, transfers, and PSV endorsements — goes through TIMS.
Types of Driving Licences in Kenya
- Class A — Motorcycles
- Class B — Light motor vehicles (most learners)
- Class C — Heavy commercial vehicles
- Class D — PSV/matatu
- Class E — Heavy tractors and trailers
Requirements for a New Licence (Class B)
- National ID or Passport
- KRA PIN certificate
- 2 recent passport photos
- Medical fitness certificate (form DL1) from a government hospital
- Application fee: KSh 3,050
Step 1 — Create a TIMS Account
Go to tims.ntsa.go.ke and register using your National ID number. You will receive an OTP on your Safaricom number registered with Huduma Namba.
Step 2 — Apply for a Learner Licence
Go to Licences → Apply for Learner Licence. Upload your ID, pay KSh 600, and book a written theory test slot. Tip: Test slots at Nairobi offices fill within minutes — refresh at exactly 6 AM when slots open.
Step 3 — Pass the Theory Test
30 questions on the Highway Code, road signs, and vehicle mechanics. Pass mark is 24/30. Study the Highway Code Kenya booklet.
Step 4 — Practical Driving Test
Book your practical test on TIMS. Bring a vehicle — your own, a driving school vehicle, or a TIMS-registered hire. The examiner tests: moving off, gear changes, roundabouts, parking, and emergency stops.
Step 5 — Collect Your Licence
TIMS generates your licence after passing. Collect at the NTSA centre or opt for postal delivery (7–14 days). Valid for 3 years before renewal.
Renewing an Existing Licence
Log in to TIMS → Renew Licence. Valid licence renewal costs KSh 1,050. Expired licences attract KSh 50/day penalty from expiry date.
