Getting Paid From Abroad Is a Skill โ€” and It Pays

Kenyans who learn to receive international payments properly keep more money. The difference between using the wrong portal or payment method and choosing the right one can cost you thousands of shillings every month โ€” cash that should be yours.

Getting paid from abroad is not about luck. It is a skill. And like most skills, it has rules, fees, portals, and deadlines. Learn them, and you stop bleeding money to middlemen and exchange rates. Ignore them, and you watch your earnings shrink before the cash hits your phone.

The Money Is Real โ€” But the Obstacles Are Too

Getting paid from abroad happens because Kenya is home to verified Kenyan freelancers and remote workers who solve problems for people in London, New York, and Dubai. The Central Bank of Kenya is expecting diaspora remittances to grow to $5.24 billion in 2026, and a chunk of that now comes from digital work, not just family money transfers.

But the platforms are changing. Sendwave and Wise have limited certain cash transfer services for Kenyan users, while Hurupay has stopped its US dollar banking services for customers in the country. PayPal has also frozen or restricted a number of Kenyan accounts where users have been unable to provide requested employment and residence information. Kenya faces heightened scrutiny over anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing controls. The country remains on the Financial Action Task Force's list of jurisdictions under increased monitoring, prompting closer attention to financial transactions and customer verification.

This is not new drama. This is the operating environment now. The good news: when you know what you are doing, these restrictions do not touch you.

The Best Path: Wise, Flutterwave, or Your Bank Account

Wise is the single best solution for most Kenyan freelancers and small businesses receiving international payments in 2026. Here is why it matters: there is no fee to receive USD into Wise, and the exchange rate is better than a bank will give you. On $3,000 per month in international income, choosing Wise over PayPal saves you roughly KSh 23,000โ€“27,000 per month.

Open an account at wise.com (takes 15 minutes). Your international client gets a US bank account number to wire money to โ€” it looks normal, works like a bank transfer, and the money lands in your Wise balance within 1โ€“2 business days. Then you convert it to shillings or leave it sitting in USD. Using a Wise account means Kenya CBK regulations do not directly apply until you bring funds into Kenya.

For online stores or businesses that want customers to pay with cards, use Flutterwave, which allows you to accept international card payments (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) in USD, GBP, EUR, and other currencies directly on your website. At 3.8% + $0.20 per transaction, Flutterwave is more expensive per transaction than Wise for simple invoice payments. Save it for customer-facing sites where you need card flexibility.

If you have a Kenyan business bank account and your international client can do a wire transfer, that works too. Just know: SWIFT incoming wire transfer fees of $10โ€“25 per transfer are charged by the sending bank and often by the receiving Kenyan bank. On a small invoice, that eats the margin.

Know the Tax and Currency Rules Before Cash Arrives

The KRA expects to know about income you earn from abroad. It does not matter if it is USD sitting in a Wise account or shillings hitting a Kenya Commercial Bank account. Income is income.

The Central Bank of Kenya requires that foreign currency received for goods and services exported from Kenya must be converted to KES within 90 days under the Foreign Exchange Act. This means: if you hold USD in Wise or a forex bureau for longer than 90 days without converting it, you are technically not compliant. Most freelancers convert monthly or hold small amounts in foreign currency for business expenses โ€” that is fine. But do not leave USD parked for six months and expect no questions.

If your Wise account balance hits significant sums, declare the income. A freelancer making $5,000 a month in international income is not invisible to the KRA. Keep receipts, invoices, and payment records for three years. When you file your annual KRA return, include the income. The tax rate on employment-like income is progressive โ€” your actual rate depends on the amount โ€” but paying it keeps you safe.

The Small Rules That Save Money

Verify every client payment method before the invoice. If they say "We can do PayPal," ask: "Can you do a bank wire instead?" Bank wires to Wise are cheaper and faster than PayPal's fees and hold times. If they can only use PayPal or Upwork, use the platform. Do not fight over KSh 200. But if they have flexibility, route them to Wise and save yourself a few thousand shillings per month.

Never use a forex bureau for ongoing foreign payments. A bureau is for emergency cash โ€” you need $500 today, walk in, pay the bureau's spread, walk out. For regular US dollar income, a bureau's margins will cost you 5โ€“8% per transaction compared to Wise. Over a year, that is thousands of shillings gone.

Keep your Wise or Flutterwave profile updated. Upload ID and proof of address when asked. Banks check clients under the 2009 proceeds of crime and anti-money laundering law as amended in 2023, and the Central Bank of Kenya supervises banks and mobile money. These checks are normal. Do not be spooked. Answer promptly, provide truthful information, and your account stays open.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wise actually free to receive money?

Yes. Wise charges no fee to receive international payments into your USD account. You only pay when you convert the money to shillings โ€” a small fee (around 0.5%) plus the mid-market exchange rate. For most freelancers, this is still cheaper than a bank wire or PayPal.

What happens if I do not convert my foreign currency within 90 days?

Foreign currency received for goods and services exported from Kenya must be converted to KES within 90 days. If you exceed this, you may face questions from the KRA or your bank. For most freelancers, converting monthly or holding small emergency balances is not a problem. Check with your bank if you plan to hold large amounts.

Can I receive M-Pesa payments from international clients?

M-Pesa has limited international receiving capability. For regular freelance income, you are better off receiving through Wise or Payoneer and then withdrawing to M-Pesa. This also gives you better exchange rates and lower fees.

Do I need to declare international freelance income to KRA?

Yes. All income is taxable in Kenya, whether it comes from abroad or locally. Keep invoices and payment records, declare the income on your annual tax return, and you stay compliant. The tax rate depends on your total annual income, so run the numbers with a verified tax expert if you earn above KSh 500,000 per year.
