The Kenyan Web Development Market

What Kenyan Businesses Need Online

Most Kenyan SMEs don't need a Silicon Valley web app. They need a fast, mobile-first site that does one of three things: show what the business offers, collect inquiries via WhatsApp or phone, or sell products with M-Pesa payment.

The market segments clearly: simple landing pages (KSh 5,000–15,000), business websites with 5–10 pages (KSh 15,000–40,000), and e-commerce shops with payment integration (KSh 30,000–100,000). Most of your clients will be in the first two categories.

The Mobile-First Reality

Over 80% of Kenyan internet traffic comes from mobile phones — mostly affordable Android devices on 3G or 4G. If your website doesn't work on a KSh 8,000 Tecno phone on Safaricom data, it doesn't work in Kenya.

This means: every design must be responsive (mobile-first), images must be compressed and lazy-loaded, the total page weight should stay under 2MB, and the site must be usable on a 480px-wide screen. Test on a real cheap phone, not just Chrome DevTools.

  • •Design mobile-first, then adapt for desktop — not the other way around
  • •Compress all images to WebP format with a quality of 75–80%
  • •Use system fonts where possible — Google Fonts add load time
  • •Avoid heavy JavaScript frameworks for simple brochure sites
  • •Test on throttled 3G in Chrome DevTools (but also on a real phone)

Choosing Your Stack

You don't need to know every framework. Pick one path and master it:

WordPress: best for business sites with 5+ pages that clients need to update themselves. Powers 40% of the web. Tons of themes and plugins. Needs hosting (shared hosting starts at KSh 3,000/year). Good for clients who want a CMS.

Next.js / React: best for custom web apps, landing pages that need to be fast, and sites with complex interactivity. Free hosting on Vercel. Better performance but requires coding knowledge. Good for developers.

Wix / Squarespace: best for very small budgets or non-technical clients who want to update their own site. Monthly subscription (KSh 1,500–4,000/month). Limited customisation. Not ideal for e-commerce with M-Pesa.

For most Kaziiko work, WordPress + a good theme covers 70% of projects. Next.js covers the rest.
