The Kenyan Accounting Services Market
Why SMEs Need You
Kenya has over 7 million micro, small, and medium enterprises. The vast majority keep their records in a notebook, a random spreadsheet, or not at all. They don't know their actual profit. They can't tell you their best-selling product. They file KRA returns late (or not at all) and pay penalties.
A qualified accountant at a firm charges KSh 30,000–100,000/month. An SME making KSh 500,000/month can't justify that. But they can afford KSh 5,000–15,000/month for someone who keeps their books clean, files their taxes on time, and tells them where their money is going.

Tools of the Trade
QuickBooks Online: KSh 1,500–4,000/month, widely accepted in Kenya. Multi-currency support, integrates with M-Pesa through third-party tools. Good for clients who want a professional system.
Wave: free accounting software. Invoicing, receipt scanning, basic reports. Best for micro-businesses and sole proprietors. Limitation: no payroll module for Kenya.
iTax (KRA): every accountant must know iTax inside out. Login, navigate, file returns, generate tax compliance certificates. This is non-negotiable.
Excel/Google Sheets: still the backbone for many clients. Custom templates for cash books, payroll calculators, and management reports. Never underestimate a well-built spreadsheet.
Tally/Sage: some established Kenyan businesses use these. Less common for SMEs but worth knowing if you target larger clients.
Create a free QuickBooks Online account and practise with sample data before working on a client's books. A mistake on a live set of books is expensive and embarrassing to fix.
